He was born in Dallas in 1946 to Ernest John Zink and Ida Pearl Zink. Steve graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School before joining the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War. He served in the Air Force from 1966 to 1969 and completed his duty ranked as a Staff Sergeant in 1969. Steve was a proud member of the US Air Force Pony Express CH-3E 20th Helicopter Special Operations Squadron. He was a recipient of the Award of the Distinguished Flying Cross for outstanding heroism and selfless devotion to duty bringing great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
Upon return from Vietnam, he went to work for Southwestern Bell (later AT&T) and retired with AT&T after over 30 years. In 1971, he met and married Carol Ann Vancil McKinney.
Steve was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Pearl Zink, and his brother-in-law, Robert Taylor. He is survived by his wife, Carol Zink, his daughters, Debbie McKinney Cosgrove and Dina McKinney Johnson, 6 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren, his sister, Sandy Taylor, his brother, John Zink (and wife Ann), nephews, nieces, great-nephews and great-nieces, and many other loved ones and friends.
Steve was an incredibly kind man who loved his family greatly and was so proud of them. He was a dog-lover and rescued a number of cocker spaniels over the years with wife, Carol.
A brief graveside memorial service honoring Steve will be held on Tuesday, October 17th at 10 a.m. at the DFW National Cemetery in Dallas, Texas.
