love of her family.
Elyse was a force of nature—a strong, determined woman with a generous spirit and a heart
devoted to her family. Born on August 6, 1936 to John and Catherine Loucks Hall, Elyse grew up
learning the value of hard work and resilience, traits she carried with her throughout her life. She
was an entrepreneur in the truest sense—never afraid of a challenge and always building
something meaningful with her own two hands.
Her love for gardening reflected her nurturing soul—she could coax life and beauty out of the
soil just as she did in the lives of those around her. Elyse also had a well-known appreciation for
"cocktail time," a cherished ritual that often brought her family and friends together to relax,
reminisce, and laugh.
Family was at the very heart of Elyse’s world. She was preceded in death by her beloved
daughter, Jill Smitherman; her parents, Catherine and John; her stepdad Milton Harris; her sister,
Jeannean Thornton; and many others she held dear. Her legacy continues through her daughters,
Lisa Sylvester (Richard Sylvester) and Jan Smitherman; her stepsister, Janet Harding; and her
treasured grandchildren: Elyse Bonner, Lauren Behrens, Adrienne Crabill, John Crabill, Nicole
Fussell, Jodi Branham, Colton Smitherman, Richard Sylvester Jr. and Jessica Sylvester.
She also leaves behind 12 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, and a large extended
family of nieces, nephews, and loved ones whose lives she touched deeply.
Elyse’s life was defined by love, laughter, and loyalty. She was the matriarch, the glue, the one
who never let go of tradition or let a moment with family go unappreciated. Her spirit lives on in
every tomato vine blooming in spring, every shared toast, and every story told around the dinner
table.
She will be forever missed and forever loved.
