Jon McClanahan of Forney, Texas, was born August 13, 1946, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and son. He lived his life honorably and passed from this world on Thursday, April 10, 2025. He was 78. He is survived by his wife, Mary McClanahan, daughter and son-in-law Dallas and Jerry Manly, grandchildren Emily Richter, Seth Manly, and their loving spouses Rayden Richter and Lydia Manly, who also called him “Pappy”. Sonny McClanahan and Don McClanahan, together with their wives Barbara and Patsy grieve the loss of their dear brother, as well as his nieces and nephews who loved Uncle Jon. Additionally, he is preceded in death by parents Perry and Kate McClanahan, Bo-Pete McClanahan(brother) and Cathryn McClanahan Canaday (sister).
Jon grew up moving frequently while Perry McClanahan worked in the oil fields of Louisiana and south Texas and Kate Pritchard McClanahan chased after the twins, Jon and Don. Jon met and married the love of his life, Mary, in 1969 after returning from active duty in the Army. They were happily married for 55 years.
Jon was a loyal employee of Tennessee Gas pipeline for over 38 years. He was an avid outdoorsman and was either planning for deer season or slipping out after work every day to the nearest quiet, wooded spot. When he wasn’t hunting, he was fishing in the many lakes and rivers in Northeast Louisiana. Perhaps the dearest trait Jon had was his tremendous devotion to his family. Jon was a loyal son; he loved his brothers and sister and prioritized spending time with them and their family members. He checked on nieces and nephews, and he was a wonderful Dad and incredible Pappy to Emily and Seth.
As an adult, Jon placed his trust in Jesus for his salvation and began a relationship with God that transformed him over the years. The love that he had for Jesus made him and Mary even closer, and his love for family and others was used by God to give Jon a heart for service. He served in his local church for many years as a deacon. He would frequently call or visit sick church members or support hurting or grieving friends. Jon was passionate about helping others and relationships. He would see a need and find a way to fill it. When he and Mary moved to Texas, he continued to look for ways to use his gifts. Later when Parkinson’s took his mobility, he continued to emanate grace and gentleness of spirit despite frustrating limitations.
The family would like to thank dear friends and family for their support and prayers over the last few weeks. A memorial for Jon McClanahan will be held Friday, April 25, 2025, at 12:00 pm at Community Life Church, Sunnyvale Campus, 610 East Highway 80, Sunnyvale, Texas 75182. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to be made to your local church or favorite charity.
