Gary Bertrand Calvert was born on November 1, 1942 and passed away January 4, 2024 at the age of 81 after a long battle with Alzheimer’s Disease. Gary was born in Kansas City, MO to Lt. Colonel George B and Flora Belle Calvert, who preceded him in death along with his older brother George Jr and sister Carol Eberly. Gary and family moved to Texas in the 1950’s, where he attended Edison High School in San Antonio and the University of Texas at Austin, graduating with a business degree.
Gary married Linda Allen in 1964 and brought up three children, Brett, Dana and Joanne. He traveled for work to Austin, Baton Rouge, LA, Grand Island, NE, and returned to San Antonio in 1976 to open a business, Liquor Mart, which he operated for many years. Along the way Gary enjoyed golf, hunting, fishing at the Texas Coast, caring for dogs and other activities with family and friends, and was a kind, generous and quiet man. His last few years were spent with companion Dorothy Maxwell in Devine, Rockport and Longview, finally in the care of Buckner Westminster Nursing Home until his passing.
Gary is survived by his children Brett Calvert of San Antonio, Dana Allen of Sinton, and Joanne Czarnecki of Santa Rosa Beach, Florida, 8 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. The family would like to thank his caregivers at Marshall Hospice, and in lieu of flowers to remember him through contributions to the Alzheimer’s Association. Gary was cremated and a private service will be held at some time in the future to celebrate his legacy and love.
