Charles “Chuck/Mac” McNair Northrop passed away on April 11, 2023, he was 88. He was born in Fayetteville, NC on January 22, 1935. The son of Walter and Annie Northrop, he grew up in St Paul, NC and on the family farm in Tar Heel, NC.
After graduating from St Paul's High School as class President, he joined the Navy, became a radiology technician and met his future wife of 64 years, Doris Jolly. After returning from the Navy, he attended and graduated from the University of North Carolina with a degree in Business. What followed was a 25+ year career with the Provident Life Insurance company where he worked as a sales representative first in Greensboro NC, then in Atlanta, GA and finally as the South Florida Regional Sales Manager out of Miami, FL.
He had an infectious personality and a fun mischievous sense of humor. He was an excellent conversationalist and humanitarian. He was such a relatable person and could speak to anyone with ease on pretty much any topic. He was an avid collector of coins and stamps and an enthusiastic reader and viewer of murder mystery books and tv shows/movies. In addition, he was a big UNC fan and he enjoyed his baseball, the Boston Red Sox and the Atlanta Braves in particular. He also enjoyed traveling, Norman Rockwell’s artwork and reading and sharing the newspaper comics.
After retiring, he and Doris moved from Miami, FL to Snellville, GA where they joined Victory World Church and became small group bible study facilitators. He also became a very active member of his local government and community and an advocate for the preservation of the environment and our democracy overall. He enjoyed donating his time and money to the local Co-op, the USO, the Audubon Society, and the Sierra Club. A few years ago, he and Doris moved to Dallas, TX to be closer to their grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife Doris, his four boys Andrew, Philip, Douglas and Karl, his five grandchildren and
one great grandchild and his only sister Betty Ann Blackburn.
