Born in Alvin, Texas to Morine and Andrew Kovich, Steve grew up in Dallas and graduated from Bryan Adams High School in 1963. He then attended Texas A&M University where he was active in the Corps of Cadets and Ross Volunteers before graduating with a degree in business administration in 1967.
After graduation, Steve chose to serve his country as an airman in the United States Air Force. He served during the Vietnam War where he flew the O-1 Bird Dog as a forward air controller and the B-52 Stratofortress as a bomber pilot. For his exemplary service, he was awarded the Air Medal and the Distinguished Flying Cross. He was honorably discharged from the Air Force in 1980, but later returned to serve the country he loved as a member of the United States Coast Guard Reserve during Desert Shield and Desert Storm. He retired from military service in 1995.
Outside the service, Steve took his love of flying to the airlines and had a long career as an airline pilot. He later earned his master’s degree in marriage and family counseling and eventually transitioned from flying to work as a counselor, ultimately running his own marriage and family therapy practice.
Steve had an insatiable love of adventure and history and was a passionate storyteller. He loved sailing on Galveston Bay and enjoyed hiking and camping, particularly out west. He also enthusiastically studied history and loved genealogy. He quite frequently conducted his own excursions to points across the US and loved to share our family’s story. Steve also enjoyed following his sons and their own Air Force adventures. He travelled around the world to connect with his sons’ families and always took time to reminisce about his own Air Force experience and reflect on the family’s history.
Steve was preceded in death by his parents, Morine and Andrew Kovich. He is survived by his sisters, Marjorie, Ann, and Sarah; his sons Andrew (Tonya) and Matthew (Amanda); his four grandchildren, Justin, Ryan, Sara, and Matthew; and his nieces Kristin, Paola and Johana.
His family wishes to thank the staff in the Memory Care Unit of Avenues of Park Forest in Dallas for their loving care of Steve over the past several years.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date. At this time, family and friends are encouraged to use this site to post their favorite photos and memories of Steve.
