It is with profound sadness yet with hearts full of gratitude for a life beautifully lived that we announce the passing of Shirley Lee Klauba (née Dew) 2 days before her 91st birthday. Born on a crisp winter day in 1933 to proud parents Garland and Madeleine Bratton Dew, Shirley was the embodiment of the vibrant spirit of Indianapolis, the city she loved and called home all her life.
Shirley's early years were marked by academic achievement and community involvement, leading to her graduation from Ben Davis High School in the spring of 1950. It was there that she met her first husband, with whom she embarked on the journey of family life, welcoming her daughters Jerri and Gail in 1951 and 1953, respectively. Despite the challenges that followed their subsequent divorce, Shirley's resilience shone through as she raised her daughters with a balance of gentle care and firm guidance.
In 1960, Shirley married Milton Goldstein and they celebrated the birth of their daughter, Angela, in 1962. Shirley embraced motherhood with joy, dedicating several years to nurturing her young family before her entrepreneurial spirit led her to a successful career in real estate and mortgage lending. Her professional path was characterized by the same integrity and dedication she devoted to her family.
The year 1980 was a milestone in Shirley's life when she married David Klauba, her greatest love and partner in life. Their marriage was a testament to enduring love and mutual respect, lasting until David's passing in June of 2022.
Shirley's family was her pride and joy. She is lovingly remembered by her daughters, Jerri Williamson, Gail Meier (Bruce), and Angela Swinton; and her brother, William E. Shackelford, of Chicago. Shirley's legacy extends to her grandchildren: Derek Williamson (Terea), West Kaai (Chelsea), Branson Kaai, Kyle Meier (Sara), and Leslie Warta (Brandon) and 10 great-grandchildren.
Shirley's memory is honored by the lives of the grandsons who preceded her in passing, Cameron Watson and Justin Meier, whose memories remain a cherished part of our family tapestry.
An avid lover of card games, Shirley was a formidable bridge player and enjoyed the camaraderie and challenge of the game. Her younger years were filled with the joy of dance, as she frequented local dances, a testament to her love for music and movement.
Shirley Lee Klauba's life story is one of love, resilience, and the enduring strength of family bonds. Her unwavering support, heartfelt wisdom, and the laughter she shared will resonate with us always. As we bid farewell to Shirley, we celebrate the immeasurable impact she had on all who were fortunate enough to know her.
A Celebration of Shirley's life will be held on Saturday, February 17th, 2024 from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm, at the Ministry Center, 3600 West 96th Street, Indianapolis, Indiana 46268. Friends and family are invited to share memories and celebrate Shirley's remarkable life.
