Dr. Peter Johnson Jr.

Dr. Peter Johnson, Jr., 96, Indianapolis, passed away November 27, 2018. He was born June 18, 1922 in Kearny, NJ, the son of Anton “Peter” and Hilda (Hunger) Johnson. Dr. Johnson graduated from Belleville High School in Bellville, NJ in 1939. He served in the United States Navy from 1942-1949, during which time he served aboard the USS DeHaven and the USS Mansfield. During his military service, Dr. Johnson pursued his education by attending Purdue University and graduating from the University of Virginia in 1946. He continued his education at the Kansas State University School of Veterinary Medicine, where he graduated in 1954. Dr. Johnson practiced veterinary medicine from 1954-1992 at Keystone Pet Hospital in Indianapolis. He also served as a veterinarian for the Indianapolis Zoo from 1960-1986. Dr. Johnson was a lifetime member and past officer of the Central Indiana Veterinary Medical Association, the Indiana Veterinary Medical Association, and the American Veterinary Medical Association. For over 60 years he was a member of the Sertoma Club, Broad Ripple Chapter and was a member of the Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons for over 70 years. Dr. Johnson also served on the board of directors of Noble School and volunteered for Oasis Intergenerational Tutoring. He married Wilma Louise Coe on March 2, 1947, and she preceded him in death in August 2008. Dr. Johnson is survived by his sons, Peter L. Johnson (Laurie) and Brett A. Johnson (Julie); five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, January 20, 2019 from 1-4 PM, with a Celebration of Life service beginning at 3 PM at Northminster Presbyterian Church, 1660 Kessler Boulevard East Drive, Indianapolis, Indiana 46220.
