Nora Williams was born on January 17, 1931, and went to be with Jesus on April 21, 2026.
For thirty-five years, she served as a civil servant with the United States Air Force. She was married to Charles Williams for many years, and she made her home in Selma, Alabama, for eighty-five years. Nora was a devoted member of The First Baptist Church of Selma.
In 2017, she moved to Westfield, Indiana, with her sister, Ray Dean Dodson. The two of them shared nine wonderful years together, enjoying the company of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
Nora loved traveling, cruising, scuba diving, and—above all—shopping. Jewelry, clothes, Christmas sweaters, anything Christmas, antiques… truthfully, she delighted in buying just about anything. She was known for her joyful eccentricity and her boundless generosity.
Her nieces and nephews shared these memories of their Aunt Nora:
“Everyone needs an Aunt Nora.”
“She was so helpful when our children were young; she would drop everything to come help if we needed her.”
“The world became a little less sassy on April 21.”
“You mean the world became a lot less sassy on April 21.”
“One word she loved to say was ‘Marvelous’—and that is exactly what she was.”
From her sister, Ray Dean Dodson:
“She was the best big sister and would do anything for me. She became another mother to me when our mom died and I was only two. The world will not be the same without Nora.”
Aunt Nora told everyone she lived to be ninety-five years old because of vodka and cigars. She never drank or smoked in her entire life. She just loved watching the reactions of others.
Even though we will not see her again on this side of heaven, we look forward to the day we see her again with Jesus. Everyone truly does need an Aunt Nora—someone marvelous in their love, their work, their play, their giving, and yes, even their buying.
Marvelous… that is who she was.
