Michael Lee Longest, aged 72, of Terre Haute, Indiana, passed away in Indianapolis on February 20, 2025, following a brief battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his beloved sons and sister at the time of his passing.
Mike was an alumnus of Remington High School, graduating in 1970. He was a three-year letterman in both basketball and track. He took great pleasure in participating in and spectating his children’s and grandchildren’s sporting events. Known for his candid critiques of referees and umpires, he nonetheless instilled values of fairness and good sportsmanship in those around him.
Following his graduation from Indiana State University, Mike embarked on a career in radio within the Terre Haute area. He subsequently founded MLC Advertising and Marketing, successfully managing the business for over two decades.
In his later years, Mike achieved a personal milestone by obtaining his pilot's license, a source of immense pride. He relished the opportunity to fly locally from the Terre Haute Regional Airport, often inviting friends and family to join him in his Cessna 172.
Mike also found joy in performing with the Crosley Radio Players, a pursuit he enjoyed for many years.
One of his greatest enjoyments in life was spending time at Fountain Park Chautauqua, which is a two-week gathering of family and friends in a relaxed camplike setting. Mike would enjoy the company of his children, grandchildren (emphasis added) and family while engaging in conversation, card games, campfires, and various other activities. It genuinely is his favorite place.
He is survived by his sons, Chris Longest (Allison) and Ryan Longest (Katrina); his stepchildren, Matt Newmister, Jesse Newmister (Margaret), and Anne Newmister; his grandchildren, Braden and Zachary Longest (Chris/Allison), Eleanor and Cecilia Longest (Ryan/Trina), and Nelly Newmister (Jesse/Margaret); and his sister, Denise Gray (Ron).
Mike was preceded in death by his parents, D. Gene and Faye Marie Longest, and his brother, Martin Longest.
He was a kind man of God and who loved his family fiercely, especially his grandchildren. His passing leaves a hole in his community and in the hearts of his family.
A memorial service will be held, details to be released. Neptune Society has been entrusted with cremation arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Fountain Park Chautauqua (https://www.fountain-park.org) and the Children’s Heart Foundation( https://www.childrensheartfoundation.org )
