Mary Annette Batrich, 91, of Indianapolis, Indiana, died peacefully in her home Wednesday, August 30, 2023. She was born July 12, 1932, in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, to Byron and Genevieve (Royse) Rosenheimer. The family moved to Indianapolis when she was very young. She attended John Strange Elementary School and Ladywood School, eventually going to Butler University where she graduated in three years with a degree in Education. While at Butler, she met her husband Donald Batrich (deceased) and many lifelong friends. Mary was a humble member of Mensa. After graduation, she taught school a few years, then began working at the Children’s Museum for thirty-five years, receiving the Rose Award for her exceptional service.
Mary and Don loved vacationing with family, spending twenty-eight consecutive years going to Palisades Park in Michigan. Mary loved playing games with the family, as well as cards and book club with her friends. Mary loved going to the movies and reading novels as well as gardening, achieving a Master Gardener designation. She also loved traveling the world eventually trekking all seven continents. Mary was also fond of animals and enjoyed college sports. Her teams were Butler, Purdue, and Alabama. She was active and vibrant to the end of her battle with cancer.
Mary is survived by her children: Bonnie Brown, Barbara Birge (Bob Birge), Teresa Rhodes, and Joe Batrich. She also is survived by her grandchildren, Liz Brown Crawley, (James), Ryan Birge (Amy), Nick Brown, Kelly Birge Hartman (Will), Anna Rhodes Steckbeck (Wyatt), Andy Birge, and Alex Birge (Erin); great-grandchildren, Brody, Ellis, Abby, Claire, Grace, Teddy, Liam, and Palmer. And most importantly her dog and best companion, Murphy, whom she talked to daily and swears he could understand.
Calling will be held at St. Matthew Catholic Church on Saturday, September 9, 2023 9:30am-10:30am , Mass at 10:30am, followed by lunch in the fellowship hall. Mary’s favorite color was yellow and we would like to request that attendees wear something yellow in her remembrance.
