She was born December 5, 1924 to John David and Amanda Jones Toliver in the same lantern-lighted, four-room Bonds Chapel area home where she spent her entire youth. Jewell graduated from West Baden High School in 1942.
After World War ll ended, she married her high school sweet heart, Harold “Hoover” Agan who had just returned from submarine service in the South Pacific. They soon opened Agan’s Market in West Baden and began raising their family. Hoover preceded her in death in 1990, after they had retired to Florida.
She was also preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, five sisters and two great grandchildren.
Jewell leaves behind her sons: Kim Agan (Sharon) of Bountiful, UT and Jeff Agan (Barbara) of Floyds Knobs, IN; and her daughters, Jolyn Agan (Charles Noyes) of Floyds Knobs, IN; and Dara Cassidy (Charles) of West Baden, IN. Her 14 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren; 2 great-great grandchildren will dearly miss their Nana as will a host of other loving relatives and friends.
She led a very active and fiercely independent life until the very end. She loved playing Scrabble while sharing Margaritas with her opponents. Jewell was a long-time member the P.E.O. Sisterhood and Psi Iota Xi sororities.
A graveside service will be September 16, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. at Bonds Chapel Cemetery, 8625 County Rd 810 N, West Baden Springs, IN 47469.
The family requests that expressions of sympathy be made through memorial donations to the Bonds Chapel Cemetery Fund, c/o Wilbur Bennet, 6893 N. County Rd. 975 W., West Baden Springs, Indiana 47469.
