Don was born November 29, 1934, in Green Bay, Wisconsin, and was a loyal Packers fan. He graduated from Carroll College (now Carroll University) in Waukesha, Wisconsin. While attending, Carroll he met his wife, Joanne, whom he married in 1958. He entered the Marine Corps Reserve in 1958 and served at both Parris Island (SC) and Camp Lejeune (NC).
Mr. Hannon, as he was called by his students, was a favorite chemistry teacher to many, largely for his quiet demeanor. After school tutoring was always available to struggling students. Mr. Hannon had a great sense of humor, which students were sure to mention even years later when meeting his family. He retired in 1997 from Southport High School after thirty years of teaching, including at Manual High School, Crispus Attucks, and a small school in Darlington, Indiana.
Don was a dedicated singer throughout his life. He enjoyed singing hymns for many years at University Heights United Methodist Church (Indianapolis) and entertaining with the Chordlighters Barbershop Chorus (Greenwood/Columbus, IN). Following his retirement from teaching chemistry, Don and Joanne moved to Greybrook Lake (Spencer, IN), where they lived an adventurous “2nd life.” Don directed the choir at Spencer Presbyterian Church, played basketball with friends, and enjoyed living in the country.
Don is survived by his wife Joanne; sons, Eric (Jenny) Hannon (Indianapolis) and Kyle (Shawn) Hannon (Bloomington); grandchildren, Conner (Kat) Hannon, Mitch (Carleigh) Hannon, Haley (Caleb) Campbell, Joe Hannon, Marshall (Erin) Hannon, Noah (Brooke) Hannon, and Lilly Hannon; several great-grandchildren; and sister Joan Wolfarth.
