William Jacob Baum

February 4, 1937 – April 4, 2026
Obituary of William Jacob Baum
William Jacob Baum, age 89, passed away April 4, 2026 in Houston, Texas. Bill was born on February 4, 1937 in Cicero, Illinois to the late Norman Louis and Emma Ella (Bauer)Baum.

Bill earned a degree in engineering from the University of Illinois and later served in the US Army as an infantry paratrooper. He started his career at Youngstown Sheet & Tube Company and then continued his work in computers, employed by RR Donnelley & Sons for 28 years and later at Moraine Valley Community College.

Bill and his wife Landa lived a life of service to their family and community, opening their home for various gatherings and helping in countless ways. From enjoying caring for his infant grandson, building swing sets for the grandkids, helping his kids with house projects, to serving at his church, volunteering with Meals on Wheels, at the local food pantry, and at the community hospital, he loved his family and community well.

Bill’s quick wit and love of initiating good natured laughter was a beautiful compliment to his role of family encourager.

As a Christian, Bill faithfully lived a life aimed at serving Jesus in the humble decisions of everyday life by loving his family and living a life of integrity while engaging with his community. In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by his brothers, Norman, Harold and Robert. He is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years Landa(Keith) Baum, his son, David Baum(Marie); daughters, Susan Spoelstra(Jonathan), Lisa Baum; seven grandchildren, Emma Carlson(John Wesley), Joshua Gibson(Michelle), Andrew Spoelstra, Anna Shelden(Noah), Katherine Gibson, Samuel Spoelstra and Megan Gibson. He is also survived by many much-loved nieces and nephews.

There will be a military inurnment service in Georgia. Additionally, there will be a celebration of life gathering. In lieu of flowers, we encourage all to honor Bill’s legacy through service to local community, kindness in individual encounters, being committed to lifelong learning, and making others smile.
