Walter Neal Lucas was called into the presence of his Lord, the morning of October 2, 2026. He was born on December 8, 1945, in Brownsville, Texas, to Thomas Lee Lucas and Lillian Maurine Raley, the eldest of their three children.
Walter grew up in Texas, Oklahoma, and New Mexico, as his father’s oilfield services job moved the family around. Walter graduated from Permian High School in Odessa, Texas, in 1964.
In 1965, while working on his grandparent’s farm in Whiteface, Texas, he was selected for service into the United States Army. Stationed in Oakland, California, he served as military police for two years. He provided military defense during the October 1967 protests in Washington, D.C. After being honorably discharged, he soon met his future wife.
Walter married Gwendolyn Sue Harper, on January 24, 1970, at the Crescent Park Baptist Church in Odessa, Texas. From here, they built a life together, raising their two children. Walter showed his children what it was to be kind, loving, and patient, though they may not have known it at the time. He was the consummate auto parts salesman and sales manager. After retiring in 2010, he and Gwen moved to Huntsville, Texas. Walter enjoyed talking about cars, watching football and NASCAR racing with his sons, and listening to 1950s and 1960s music.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Sherlie Sowell, of Lubbock, Texas. He is survived by his loving wife, Gwen, his partner in marriage for 56 years; two sons, Jerrod Lucas, spouse Cortney Lucas of Huntsville, Texas; and Jason Lucas, spouse Jenny Huang, of Round Rock, Texas, and two grandsons; Tyler Lucas and Jaxon Lucas; one sister, Debbie Wizniewski of Houston, Texas; and nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
