
May 23, 2022 surrounded by his entire family. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Debbie, and his five
children: Kasey Hirl, her wife, Kasey Cobb, and son, Gregory; Kari Ruiz, her partner, Jackson LaCompte,
sons, Brody, Hayden, and Baylor; Kiley Harper and husband, Mikah Harper; Matthew Hirl; Kamryn Hirl;
and beloved dog, Cowboy Jack.
Mike moved to Houston when he was 6 years old. Mike was very active in sports, playing All Star Little
League and football in junior high and high school. He graduated from Sharpstown High School in 1972.
He attended the University of Texas, graduating in 1976 with a Bachelor of Arts in Economics.
Mike moved back to Houston where he worked for Occidental Petroleum Corporation for almost 20
years. After leaving Oxy, he joined Kinder Morgan where he worked for 10 years.
Fitness and staying active were very important to Mike. He joined Chancellors Racquet Club and was a
member for 40 years. He was an avid racquetball player and went on to compete in local tournaments
and in cities around Texas. He also loved playing golf, playing at Memorial Park and hitting balls at the
driving range with his son, Matthew. Playing golf at his in-laws in Lago Vista was a favorite as he loved
Lake Travis and the Hill Country.
Mike was very involved in his children’s sports activities. He coached several of their soccer teams and
was President of Westbury Soccer Club. He volunteered with Maplewood Swim team where all his
children swam. He also supported their dance and lacrosse teams.
Mike was preceded in death by his parents, Roger and Dorothy Hirl. He is survived by his siblings
including: Debbie S. Hirl and her 3 daughters; Jeff Hirl, wife, Lane, their 3 children and families; and
David Hirl and husband, Charlie Banda.
