Mary Evelyn Tracy Lewis, 83, of Houston, Texas -- know affectionately by many as "Tracy" -- passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 16, 2025, surrounded by her loving family. A devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend. Tracy leaves behind a legacy of love, energy, and unwavering kindness.
Born on November 24, 1942, in Brenham, Texas, Tracy was the daughter of Evelyn Dell Caldwell Tracy and Percy Lee Tracy and the twin sister of Thomas Tracy, all of whom preceded her in death. She graduated from Brenham High School in 1960 and soon after married Rufus Benjamin Lewis, Jr. She devoted herself to supporting their growing family and to his education at Texas A&M University. A lifelong Aggie fan, her devotion never faded -- she held season tickets, attended countless tailgates, and famously sang the Aggie War Hymn as a lullaby to her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Tracy enjoyed a successful career in executive-level customer service, holding positions with Texas Instruments, United Check Control, and JP Morgan Chase Bank, where she eventually retired early to enjoy more time with those she loved. Beyond her professional accomplishments, faith and community were central to her life. As a dedicated member of Bear Creek United Methodist Church, she volunteered in the church library, co-led the Ruth Circle, and participated faithfully in the Betwixt and Between Sunday School class until illness made continued involvement difficult.
Tracy approached life with energy and passion. An avid runner for many years, she proudly completed the Houston Marathon along with numerous 5K and 10K races. After knee surgery, she transitioned to swimming, continuing her workouts three times a week. She delighted in travel and adventure -- organizing frequent cherished trips with lifelong friends, from exploring Alaska to multiple tours throughout Europe. Yet nothing brought her greater joy than time spent with her family. To her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, she was "Grammy," a constant source of affection, encouragement, and fun. She loved cheering them on in their sports, performances, and school events and was intentional in planning special outings, trips, and activities tailored to each child's interests.
Tracy is survived by her sons, Scott Tracy Lewis (Cindy) and Ted Alton Lewis; her grandchildren Allie Lewis Ludlum, Emmie Lewis, and Branden Lewis; and her great-grandchildren Valerie Lewis and Jackson Lewis. She is also survived by her cousin Carolyn Cabness May; her sister-in-law Linda Hancock Tracy; her niece Hollie Stone Kavalew; her nephews, Chris Tracy and Michael Tracy; and many other extended family members and friends, all of whom she treasured beyond measure.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Bear Creek United Methodist Church (16000 Rippling Water Dr., Houston, TX 77084) on Monday, December 1, 2025, at 6:30 p.m. A reception will follow.
Tracy cared deeply, loved wholeheartedly, and continually put others before herself. She was a truly lovely soul, and she will b missed by so many.
"Well done, good and faithful servant ...Enter into the joy of your Lord." -- Matthew 25:23.
