Mary Jean Shilk

Mary “Jean” (Vial) Shilk was born on February 2, 1948, in Ann Arbor, Michigan, to Mary Edna and Dr. A. Burgess Vial. Jean lived a life marked by a love of learning, service to others, and dedication to her family and community.

She graduated from the University of Michigan in May 1970, earning two bachelor’s degrees in mathematics and biology. An exceptional student, she graduated summa cum laude, with a 4.0 GPA in biology and 3.98 GPA in mathematics.. She later continued her education at Texas A&M University, earning a Master of Education degree in 1985.

On June 6, 1970, Jean married Danny B. Shilk. Together, they shared more than 56 years of marriage. They raised two children, Todd Bradley Shilk and Erin Elizabeth (Shilk) Walker.

Jean devoted approximately 30 years to teaching and was recognized with Master Teacher honors. She spent more than 20 years teaching in Katy ISD. Education was more than a profession for Jean; it was a lifelong passion. She was a strong advocate for retired teachers and remained active in the Katy Area Retired Educators (KARE), serving as treasurer for several years.

Outside the classroom, Jean found great joy in traveling with Danny. Their adventures included many trips with the Traveling Aggies, giving them opportunities to experience new places and create lasting memories together.

Jean enjoyed visiting botanical gardens, cheering for the Texas Aggies and, on occasion, her alma mater, the University of Michigan. She had a special love for dogs, particularly her schnauzers, which held a special place in her heart.

One of Jean’s favorite ways to show love was through baking. She had a gift for remembering the favorite desserts of the people she cared about and delighted in making them. Her baking also became a way to give back, as she helped raise money for scholarships through the pies and cakes she made.

Jean is survived by her husband of 56 years, Danny B. Shilk; her children, Todd & Becky Shilk of Katy, Texas, and Jon & Erin Walker of College Station, Texas; her grandchildren, John Caleb & Abigail Walker, Hannah Shilk, Caroline Walker, Daniel Shilk, and Jason Walker; her sisters, M. Gail Lessard and Laura Schurtz; as well as many extended family members and dear friends.

The lessons she taught extended far beyond the classroom, and the love she shared with her family, students, colleagues, and friends will remain a lasting part of her legacy. Jean will be remembered for her devotion to her family, her commitment to education, her generous spirit, and the countless ways she cared for those around her.
