Marvin was born on August 4, 1932, in Gorman, Texas, to Arthur Dale Boswell and Lilly Maurine Watson. He grew up on a small peanut farm in De Leon along with his younger sister, Lynita. His early years in De Leon helped shape the values that remained with him throughout his life: faith, family, hard work, determination, and loyalty. He was active in sports, band, and was All School favorite during his senior year of high school, while still handling his daily chores on the farm before and after school.
On February 18, 1950, Marvin married his high school sweetheart, Mary Jo Pounds. Throughout his life, Marvin and Mary Jo shared a devotion to God and one another that served as an example to their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Marvin graduated from Texas A&M University, Class of 1955 with a degree in Petroleum Engineering. He was a proud Aggie throughout his life, even more so when his four children all graduated from The University of Texas!
Following graduation, Marvin began a long career in the oil and gas industry starting with Mobil Oil. His career with various companies took him to all parts of Texas, with short stints in Oklahoma and Louisiana. While working at Houston Oil and Gas Company 1995 an opportunity arose for Marvin to purchase the company. Through much soul searching and prayer, Marvin and Mary Jo completed the deal; which became a blessing to the family.
Yet Marvin's greatest legacy cannot be measured by professional accomplishments or business success. It is found in the family he leaves behind and in his Christian faith. He was active in leading, teaching, and serving as a deacon at his church wherever he lived.
Marvin is survived by his beloved wife of 76 years, Mary Jo; their four children and their spouses, Marilyn and Gary, Mike and Jana, Melinda and Scott, and Mark and Gail; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. His newest great-granddaughter was born in July with another great-grandson due in January. Papu, as he was called by the grandkids, took great pride in watching his family grow and prosper through the generations. Along with his immediate family, he is survived by numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
Marvin made his home in Sugar Land, Texas during the later years of his life, surrounded by the family and memories that meant so much to him. He also appreciated the help and care of his and Mary Jo’s caretakers: Doris, Lupe, Lisa, and Elizabeth.
A memorial service in his honor will be held Monday, October 19th, 2026, 11 am at Sugar Land Baptist Church, 16755 Southwest Fwy, Sugar Land, TX 77479. Food and refreshments will be provided afterwards in the adjacent fellowship hall. Marvin will have a private family burial in De Leon Texas at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Sugar Land Baptist Church or the Marvin D. Boswell ’55 Memorial Aggie Ring Scholarship at tx.ag/BoswellMemorial.
