America has lost another great Patriot and Soldier hero. Mark Perrin Lowrey died peacefully in his sleep at his home in Houston, TX, on Wednesday, 30 August 2017, following a brief illness. He was 80 years old.
Mark Lowrey was born in the Mississippi River town of Helena, Arkansas on 30 March 1937. He was the son of Willis Freed Lowrey, a career United States Army officer, and Helen Rabb Lowrey. The men of the Lowrey family had served in the US Military since the Revolutionary War, and had fought in every major war the United States had engaged in. Mark would carry on that proud and honorable tradition.
He graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point, NY, in 1960 and was commissioned into the Infantry. Over the next 20 years he would serve with great distinction. His service included two combat tours as an Infantry Company Commander and Battalion Operations Officer with the First Infantry Division in Vietnam. He also served two tours in The Panama Canal Zone and at various posts across the United States. His service resulted in, among numerous awards and decorations, the award of the Silver Star for exceptional heroism in combat, seven Bronze Star Medals (three for valor) and three Purple Hearts for wounds received in combat. He was also awarded the Legion of Merit, the second highest decoration the US Army bestows for exceptionally meritorious service.
Upon retiring from active duty in 1980 Mark joined the civilian work force in the waste industry. He served as VP for International Business Development for Browning Ferris Industries, a Houston based waste company, from 1980 until 1993, and lived in Venezuela, Bermuda, the United Kingdom and The Netherlands. In 1992 he relocated to Houston, where he joined Waste Management Corporation as the President of Waste Management, Latin America. He retired in 2002, but continued doing consulting work up until the time of his death.
Mark is survived by his wife of 57 years Sarah (Sally) Lowrey; his daughters Katherine (Kate) Henninger and Elizabeth (Liz) Dolan; son Mark, Jr.; grandchildren Mary Kate Henninger Copeland, Meaghan Henninger, Julia Dolan, Edward J. Dolan; great granddaughter Maple Copeland; his brother Lt. Col. (US Army, Ret) Freed Lowrey, Jr.; and numerous cousins, nephews and nieces.
Mark will be cremated and will be inurned at his alma mater, West Point, at a future date. In lieu of flowers, the family has designated the “Superintendent’s Annual Fund” at the West Point Association of Graduates for memorial contributions.
