Mark grew up in St. Louis, Missouri, with all his aunts, uncles, cousins and grandparents. After his father accepted a promotion in 1968, his family transferred from St. Louis, Missouri, to Houston. There he graduated from Aldine High School in 1970 and continued his education at Sam Houston State University. He earned a Business Degree in 1974 after making the Dean's Honors List.
After graduation, he accepted a sales opportunity locally with AAA Autoparts. Mark was a car man! He always had a job saving for his dream car, the 1969 Camaro Z-28, which he ordered from the factory. His knowledge and hard work ethic excelled him in this position, and he was offered a sales region in Colorado. He then transferred to Colorado in 1976 to live his dream, mountains, motorcycles, and snow skiing.
Mark returned to Houston in 1978 for an opportunity in the family home building business with The Original's Group. With this introduction to home building, he found his niche. He enjoyed the challenges and resulting innovations the entire process presented. From the planning stage to completion, problem-solving became second nature. In 1982, he formed Mark Hala Construction with The Original's Group. He was known for his custom qualities, personalizing each home to the client's need.
In 1995, his leadership and dedication in producing quality homes led him to a position on the Greater Houston Builders Association Board of Directors. In 1997 he was awarded GHBA Builder of the Year, 1998 he became a member of the National NAHB Spike Club, and in 2000 he became President of the GHBA. During his term, he worked with Conroe ISD to establish and implement a curriculum for high school students to graduate with construction certifications, helping them attain jobs right out of high school. He also helped revise the State Construction Regulations, bringing them into the 21st century.
It was a highlight of Mark's life to be a part of the elite GHBA family. He felt honored and enjoyed the genuine camaraderie of its members. He treasured those memories.
Some of Mark's best times were road trips with his family, traveling around the USA photographing God's creation, and bonding with family while playing cards, monopoly, and dominoes.
Mark loved the Lord and his people with action and truth. He was passionate about his church and his church family. His confirmation and joining of St. John were in March 1983. He has served on boards and committees at St. John for 38 years, including serving as an usher and elder.
Memories of Mark bring to life a legacy of caring and productive activity in his church, family, and community, as well as a comforting strength he showed to the ones he loved. He will be missed but not forgotten and always in our hearts.
