Loy was born on July 14, 1949 in Houston to Loy H. Spargo, Jr. and Elizabeth Clark Spargo. Loy grew up with a love of reading and he knew at five years of age that he wanted to be a veterinarian. In his adult life, he was an avid movie goer, loved a good poker game with friends, and enjoyed listening to the radio as well as reading the newspaper. Loy attended Bellaire High School and went on to graduate in 1972 from Texas A&M University with a Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine. He was a proud founding member of the Texas A&M Polo Club and he enjoyed playing polo while he was a student there. Early in his career, Loy practiced small animal veterinary medicine in addition to working at the Houston Zoo. He later transitioned to emergency veterinary medicine working for Beechnut-610 Animal Emergency Clinic, now known as Gulf Coast Veterinary Specialists and ER, until his retirement. During Loy’s time in veterinary medicine, he mentored countless veterinarians and veterinary technicians. He gave freely of his time and knowledge, he modeled how to stay calm and patient in a crisis, and he led with kindness and respect.
Loy is preceded in death by his parents, Loy and Elizabeth Spargo, and his sister, Cindy Spargo. He is survived by his brother Jeff Spargo, sister-in-law Sherry Spargo, niece Sarah Spargo, nephew Matthew Barrette, and long time companion Lora “Tootsie” Zeis.
Loy will be remembered for his gentle spirit, his unwavering generosity, and the support and love he showed to family, friends, clients, and animals. He was a loyal friend and his care and generosity showed no boundaries.
Loy’s Celebration of Life will take place April 4th from 2 to 4 pm at Uptown Veterinary Hospital 5750 Woodway Drive, suite 142 Houston, TX 77057. In lieu of flowers, please perform one act of kindness towards a human or an animal.
