Born and raised in Houston, Skip was the beloved son of John and Evelyn Smith. He carried the spirit of his hometown with him throughout his life---grounded, generous, and full of quiet strength.
Skip dedicated over 15 years of service to Hess Corporation before retiring in 2015. His work ethic was unwavering, but it was outside the office where his true passions came alive. An avid outdoorsman, Skip found joy in hiking, camping, scuba diving, surfing, and hunting. These adventures weren’t just hobbies--- they were shared experiences that forged lifelong memories with his sons, Dwight Allen and Mika Shane.
As a father, Skip led with love, wisdom, and a deep belief in life’s lessons. His parenting philosophy was simple yet profound; learn by living. He encourages his sons to face challenges head-on, always ready to lift them up and send them forward again. He taught them to treat others with respect---but also to stand firm when respect was no longer deserved. Those who knew Skip, will understand the quiet power behind that lesson.
Skip was more than a father---he was a mentor, a loyal friend, and a steady presence in the lives of many. His friendship was unconditional, his advice always honest, and his laughter unforgettable.
He is survived by his sons Dwight Allen (Kim) Smith of Monmouth, IL, and Mika Shane (Maria) Smith of Lisle IL; his cherishes niece Nicole Estrella of Houston, TX; grandchildren Addeline Smith, Zoiie Smith, Emily Smith, Danny Schultz, Eric Schub, Henry Leon, and Brandon Leon; and great-nieces Breanna Estrella, Giana Estrella, and Avianna Estrella.
A celebration of Skip’s life will be held at a later date, where stories will be shared, memories honored, and his legacy embraced.
