John Westcott Kenyon, was embraced by his beloved savior on Monday, September 25, 2023, at the age of 87, in Spring, Texas. John was born in Indianapolis, Indiana on January 29, 1936. He was preceded in death by his loving parents, Wes and Harriet Kenyon, and Rosemarie (Baer) Kenyon. He is survived by his loving, sweet wife, Judith Ann (Rylander) Kenyon. His brother, George Lommell Kenyon, and his 5 children: Susanne (Robert) Carrescia, Elizabeth (James) Knowles, Cathryn Kenyon, Richard (Jessica) Kenyon, Jennifer (Joseph) Mockaitis and one step-son Tyler (Margaret) Morrison. He is also survived by 19 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.
After graduating Purdue University,with a degree in Civil Engineering, John was employed by CBI, Chicago Bridge and Iron, for the majority of his employment career. He was privileged to work in and travel to numerous countries, working with fervor and determination on any assigned job.
Upon retirement John and Judi settled in Spring, Texas. They enjoyed a strong spiritual connection with God that they shared through church and volunteer activities. He was an elder at Northwoods Presbyterian Church. John was especially proud of his volunteer work with Habitat for Humanity and his prison ministry in Livingston, Texas. Having attended the Walk to Emmaus in S. Africa both he and Judi became very involved which led John to prison ministry. Serving for almost twenty years and obtaining a CVCA, earned through Polunsky, Certified Volunteer Chaplains Assistant, which, outside of his family, was the most important role in his life.
Playing tennis, exercising and golfing were very important to his life. His love of baseball, moving from Phillies to Astros, kept him entertained through his years. He loved the Houston Oilers and their evolution to the Texans football team, and became easily frustrated when they lost.
John’s sense of humor was only exceeded by his kindness, gentleness and caring nature. He was a loving and gracious husband and father. All who met him quickly realized what a genuine loving person he was, as epitomized by the tears we see when people share their sympathies.
When John married Judi he married an avid dog lover who quickly converted him into a dog lover. He loved and was loved by: Peter, Samantha (John’s dog), Banjo, Judymae, and now Lolly.
John’s memorial service will be held on Friday, October 13, 2023, at 1:00 pm at Northwoods Presbyterian Church, 3360 FM 1960, Houston, Texas. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Habitat for Humanity, Kairos Prison Ministry or Houston Hospice.
