Jason Kristoffer Hines, born April 25, 1972 in Lakeland, Florida to Walter D. Hines and Cheryl K. Wright Hines, died January 29, 2018, aged 45. Known as “Jay” and “Bug” to many of his relatives and friends, Jason will be sorely missed and lovingly remembered.
As a boy, Jason was always creative and loved to perform, especially singing. He adored game shows, especially "The Price is Right" - he had his sights set on one day succeeding Bob Barker. Jason was active in soccer and bowling (earning many trophies along the way) when the family lived in Rosenberg, Texas. When he was 10, his family moved to Australia for 3 years, an adventure that Jason fondly remembered; he got to see many Australian landmarks, experienced the exotic wildlife, and participated in the Australian Scouts. Graduating from Calhoun High School in Port Lavaca, where he was a standout in music and drama (going to All State as a tenor, twice), Jason attended the University of Houston and later Sam Houston State University, where he majored in music education with an emphasis in vocal performance. While in college, Jason was very active in musical performances with the university choir. After college, Jason pursued a career in retail management in Houston, working in many different capacities while working his way up the career ladder. He managed a variety of stores and earned a sterling reputation as a hard worker, a great leader and a fair boss.
Jason married Gary Chaffee in June 2017, and the couple settled in Houston. Jason loved cooking, especially baking, and was famous for his sweet desserts. He also enjoyed traveling, learning about the history of flight and airplanes, classic cars, game shows, classic TV (especially “The Love Boat” and “Knots Landing”), gardening, political debates, award shows, decorating, and of course, music.
Jason is survived by his mother Cheryl K. Hines, of Houston; father Wally Hines and his wife Carolyn of Greenville, South Carolina; husband Gary Chaffee, of Houston; six aunts, five uncles, numerous cousins and many, many friends.
Memorial contributions can be made in Jason’s name to an animal rescue or shelter of your choosing, or to Sam Houston State University’s music department to assist vocal music majors.
