Jamie Holt Carter, known affectionately to her family and many friends as “Gee,” passed away peacefully on Monday, November 24, 2025, at the age of 85. A true embodiment of Southern warmth, Jamie had a radiant smile that could light up any room and a natural gift for making everyone feel welcomed, seen, and loved.
Born on August 31, 1940, in Houston, Jamie was the beloved daughter of James “Jimmy” Fannin Holt and Madge “Mimmers” Diebitsch Holt and sister to Jo Marie Holt Chang. She grew up in the city she cherished throughout her life and was a proud member of the first-ever graduating class of Bellaire High School. After high school, she attended The University of Texas at Austin, joining the Chi Omega sorority and embracing campus life with her characteristic enthusiasm. Creative, resourceful, and stylish, Jamie sewed and tailored her own dresses for parties, formals, and sorority events—each one a reflection of her artistry and flair.
It was at The University of Texas that Jamie met the love of her life, Lynn Prewit Carter. Their courtship was filled with joy and companionship, and Lynn proposed to her in front of the Texas State Capitol—a story Jamie loved to share. All these years later, he still lights up when he talks about his true beauty he met at The University of Texas. They married on March 18, 1961, and together built an extraordinary life over 64 years of devotion, partnership, and unwavering love.
Jamie’s life was shaped by her deep and abiding Christian faith. A devoted member of Second Baptist Church in Houston for many decades, she found purpose, comfort, and community in her faith walk. Her kindness, generosity, and gentle spirit were an extension of the values she lived each day, and she instilled those same values in her children and grandchildren.
Above all else, Jamie adored her family above all else. She and Lynn raised two children in Houston and later delighted in their role as grandparents. A lifelong Longhorn and avid Texas fan, she cherished attending football games with friends, children, and grandchildren, savoring the tradition and excitement that came with every season.
Her happiest days were spent in Wimberley, Texas, at the family’s treasured home on the Blanco River. Jamie poured her heart into caring for the house and property with Lynn, and she spent countless summers wading in the river, gardening, entertaining, and soaking in the peaceful beauty of the Hill Country. The Blanco River was her sanctuary—her favorite place on earth.
Jamie expressed her creativity in countless ways. She restored antique furniture, painted, sewed, and was a proud member of a longtime hooking group with close friends—fondly and humorously known as “the hookers.” She had a gift for turning ordinary items into treasures and for infusing beauty into the spaces around her. Her love of baking was legendary, especially her famous Christmas peppermint bark—a family tradition eagerly awaited each year, with extra bags often finding their way into stockings thanks to Gee’s generous spirit.
She was also a gifted storyteller with a deep love for family history. Whether sharing tales from her childhood, recounting the adventures of generations past, or narrating daily events with humor and vivid detail, Jamie made every story feel alive. Her grandchildren especially treasured the way she made them feel part of something bigger—part of the long, rich Holt and Carter legacies she held so dear.
Jamie is survived by her devoted husband, Lynn P. Carter; her children, Jeffrey Lynn Prewit Carter and Kristen Marie Carter Nerz and her husband, Thomas Andrew Nerz; and her beloved grandchildren, Matthew Carter Nerz, Cokie Holt Nerz, and Emma Lynn Carter. Her spirit, warmth, and love will continue to live brightly in each of them.
A Celebration of Life service will be held on Thursday, December 11, 2025, at 1:00 p.m. at Second Baptist Church in the Hankamer Chapel, 6400 Woodway, Houston, Texas. A reception will follow in the Deacon’s Parlor.
Jamie’s life was one defined by faith, kindness, creativity, generosity, and love. She leaves behind a legacy of joy, beauty, and family devotion that will continue to shape the lives of those who knew her. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
