born Gwendolyn Delores Walker on April 28, 1941, in Gadsden, Alabama,
was the cherished daughter of the late Reverend Hercules O’Neal, and Annie Belle Walker. The
second of four siblings, Gwen was raised in a Christian home, where she embraced her faith early
in life, accepting Christ and being baptized in her family’s church.
After completing high school, Gwen attended Alabama State University, where she fought for civil
rights including being actively involved with the NAACP, prioritizing voting rights for Black
Americans during that pivotal time. Moreover, she had the great honor of babysitting the children
of Dr. & Mrs. Martin Luther King, Jr. in the early 1960’s.
After embarking on a new life in New York, Gwen met and fell in love with Mr. Willie Lee Glover,
and together, they solidified and built a beautiful family. Throughout the years, Gwen worked
diligently with the Mayor’s office in New York City, before taking an early retirement and
relocating to Houston, Texas in 1989, due to Willie’s health. As they moved across the United
States, she faced the challenges of a new life with grace and resilience. In her new community,
Gwen balanced her roles as wife, mother and caretaker with a commitment to her faith, attending
church often, participating in various community activities and meeting new friends.
A devoted Christian who exemplified class and humility, Gwen was the heart of the Glover family,
setting a spiritual example that influenced her loved ones. She had a heart of gold that showcased
her generous spirit, infectious laugh, and genuine kindness, leaving a lasting legacy of compassion
in the lives of many.
Our beloved mother ascended to eternal peace on Wednesday, December 18, 2024. She was a
guiding light for her children-Darrell, Marcus, and Krystal-- a treasured grandmother to Christian,
Terrence, Marnier, Marcus Jr. and Mecca--- an adored great grandmother to Adrien and Angel,
who all lovingly referred to her as “Nana”.
