She was born December 16, 1927 in New Orleans, Louisiana and moved to Niagara Falls, New York right after her marriage to Kenneth Mayes on December 11, 1947. They moved to San Diego, California in the early 60’s where she loved being next to the water. Gloria enjoyed the beautiful weather along with bike riding, tennis, painting and crafts. She also loved to sing and dance.
Never one to sit at home, she was an avid traveler and enjoyed numerous cruises. She was active late in her life, taking the bus, trolley and rail to her favorite places across the city.
She would say she set her watch 15 minutes early so when St. Peter came to get her, she would have 15 minutes more. I can see her now, at the Pearly Gates, pointing to her watch, having a healthy discussion with St. Peter.
Her final resting place is with her beloved husband, at Ft. Rosecrans Cemetery.
She is survived by her daughter, Sandra Pekarek and son, Keith Mayes, 5 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.neptunesociety.com/location/houston-cremation for the Mayes family.
