He grew up on a farm near Ponca City, Oklahoma, where he attended school. He learned to work hard from his parents and continued to have a strong work ethic his entire life.
He worked for Conoco, Inc. for 31 years and retired as Director of Rail Operations. He was a member of the American Association of Railroads on the Tank Car Committee in Washington D.C. After retiring from Conoco, he started his own rail car inspection business and continued doing that for 10 years.
Dean enjoyed boating, fishing, camping, and skiing with his family. He also enjoyed traveling, golf and square dancing with the Fair Bees. He was a long-time member of Fair Haven UMC where he attended the Men’s Bible Class. He served on several church committees including trustees, finance, evangelism and landscaping.
Dean is survived by his wife of 52 years, Barbara, one daughter, Lisa Ancell (Kevin) and three sons Jeff (Carlota), Chris, and Brad (Amy). Grandchildren include Nicole Zilveti (Andres), Lauren Ancell, Connor Armstrong, Avery Armstrong, and Taylor Armstrong. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Dean is preceded in death by his parents Arch and Arwellia Armstrong, his brother Clayton Armstrong, and his nephew Mark Armstrong.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Fair Haven Food Pantry. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, November 8th at Fair Haven UMC at 1330 Gessner in Houston with a reception to follow.
