Eldon was born on November 21, 1928 in Raeford, North Carolina, son of the late Annie Irene and Duncan Currie. After graduating from high school, Eldon enlisted in the Air Force where he served four years as an Airplane Mechanic. After leaving the military, he enrolled in the University of Miami and graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He later met and married the love of his life, Eloise Norton. They married on April 15, 1957 in Asheville, North Carolina. Eldon then started his career with the Army Corps of Engineers and followed that with a long history of working with the Man Space Program, including NASA and numerous aerospace contractors. While working at NASA, he was awarded a team Medal of Freedom for his work on the recovery mission of Apollo 13 for which he was extremely proud.
Eldon was an avid golfer and a jack-of-all trades, including wood working, auto mechanics, and any other project that he could get his hands on. Eldon was regularly called upon by family and friends for guidance on any type of project.
Eldon was proceeded in death by his parents, his siblings Marjorie Yearby, Virginia (Ginny) Currie, and Horace Currie. He is survived by his loving wife, Eloise and children Alan Currie and wife Elaine, Rodney Currie, Pam Currie Riquelmy and husband Bill. He is also survived by six grandchildren, Jason and Brandon Currie, Niki and Stewart Currie, Reagan (Riquelmy) Farmer and husband Tripp and Rhett Riquelmy, great grandson Hayes Farmer and many nieces and nephews.
Eldon believed he was blessed with and lived a happy, fulfilled life and was adamant that no tears be shed. Although he will be sorely missed, comfort is found in knowing that Eldon (Dad) is now home and without pain. As stated in Matthew 25: 23 “Well done, good and faithful servant.”
