Brice Hattery of Houston, TX, formerly of Omaha, NE, passed away on January 20, 2024, at the age of 27 years. He was born on March 25, 1996, in Fountain Valley, CA. He grew up in Norfolk, NE. He was involved in Boy Scouts of America and baseball. One of his favorite activities growing up was target shooting with his dad and brother. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed tent camping trips. He worked for many years as a pharmacy technician while obtaining his education.
He graduated from Wayne State College with a Bachelor of Science in criminal justice in 2019. There, he met lifelong friends with whom he enjoyed playing disc golf, hunting, spending hours on XBOX, and card games such as Magic. He began dating his wife, Jaden, in 2016 while in college. They were married in Norfolk, NE, on July 20th, 2019. They moved to Omaha after graduation so she could begin medical school. He worked incredibly hard to provide for her and was an unwavering emotional support during her training. Together, they had two dogs that Brice adored. His favorite days were spent at Hummel Park in Omaha throwing the disc for Layla and Rosie.
He worked as a correctional officer at Douglas County Department of Corrections. It made him proud to be in a profession that protected the community. He obtained additional training to work with the Administrative Confinement/Administrative Segregation population and participated in the Virus Containment Team during the COVID-19 pandemic. He spoke fondly of the family mentality of his workplace and referred to his fellow officers as brothers.
He was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia on August 10th, 2022. He endured treatment with various complications at the Nebraska Medical Center. After a failed stem cell transplant and no treatment options, he chose to move to Houston, TX, to seek care at the MD Anderson Cancer Center. He fought this disease with the utmost courage and strength. He did absolutely everything he could to live. Through every setback and painful procedure, he maintained his kind and considerate nature. He took each day without fear and never once felt sorry for himself. He took peace in the idea that his participation in a clinical trial would lead to improved care for future patients.
He was preceded in death by his grandfathers Kenneth Peitzmeier and Gerry Hattery.
He is survived by his wife Jaden Hattery, parents Bill and Connie Hattery, brother Carter Hattery, parents-in-law Dan and Nancy Moore, grandmother Ardene Peitzmeier, Aunts and Uncles Joel and Susan Schretenthaler, and Richard and Kay Halcom, Cousins Amy and Tony Onstott, and Sara and Nick Staha as well as nieces and nephews and various friends.
Family and friends are invited to attend a celebration of life at The Cove of Midtown Event Center located at 1102 Riverside Blvd, Norfolk, NE 68701,on Saturday, March 23rd, from 11am-2pm.
