Anna Marie Pousson passed away on May 18, 2023 after a long battle with cancer. She spent her final moments—like her entire life—surrounded by loving family and with an air of dignity and grace. A native of Houston, Anna Marie was born to August and Vlasta Jurek on July 1, 1953 and enjoyed a happy childhood alongside her siblings: Andy, Ronnie, and Carol. She liked to tell the story about the day she met Jimi Hendrix in Hobby Airport or how the doorman at the Summit let her in to see the final few songs of an Elvis concert. A graduate of Saint Agnes Academy, it was at a sock hop where she met the love of her life: Jay S. Pousson. The two were married in 1975, and remained in Houston where they raised children: Kelli, Stephanie, and Trevor. Those years were marked by organized sports, fishing trips at Port Isabel, and lots of time with cousins and extended family who lived in the neighborhood.
Few people knew about Anna Marie’s ping pong skills, but all were aware of her exceptional cooking. Dinners at the Pousson house were a cut above every restaurant in town and Sunday meals felt like Thanksgiving. She enjoyed Astros baseball, gardening, Lifetime movies, going to estate sales, playing Farkle, and watching birds. Over the years, she shared many outdoor hobbies with Jay (except for golf) and the two took a once in a lifetime trip to Alaska after their children were grown. More than any of this, she was known for her selflessness, compassion, and her love for children. She worked at St. Philip's Presbyterian day care for many years and helped raise a number of other children through her frequent babysitting. A source of wisdom for her adult children, their partners, and other family members, Anna Marie never lost that innocent spark and youthful imagination that caused grandchildren and neighborhood kids to light up in her presence. Whether on the phone or at her kitchen table, friends and family knew they could confide in her, and children enjoyed sitting with her doing the little projects she came up with.
Anna Marie endured a battle with breast cancer in the final six years of her life with her husband at her side. Even at her sickest, she rarely complained about her pain and frequently had a smile on her face. She loved to visit with family and to spend time with her grandchildren and neighbors. She is survived by her mother Vlasta Jurek, siblings Andy Jurek, Ronnie Jurek, and Carol Baumgarth, her husband Jay Stephen Pousson, her children Kelli Nicole Sommer, Stephanie Marie Casey, Trevor James Pousson, and their respective partners: Nicholas Sommer, Matthew Casey, and Karen Barton. She is also survived by the grandchildren who were so fortunate to experience the magic of Nana: Ivy Wren Sommer, Hazel Rose Casey, Eloise Mae Sommer, James Casey, and Grey Wilder Sommer. Funeral services will be held at Saint Rose of Lima Catholic Church on June 10th at 2:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider making a donation in Anna Marie’s name to Roots and Wings Charitable Foundation (www.rootswingsfoundation.org).
