Alfred Price Shire Sr died September 7, 2017 in Houston, TX. He is survived by his wife, Nora Krisch Shire; his son Alfred Price Shire Jr. and granddaughter Katelynn Shire of Austin, Texas; his sister, Betty Hall, and three sons, all of California.
Al Shire was born April 2,1923 in Paris, Kentucky from parents William Shire and Ruth Rosenbaum. He attended college at the University of Kentucky earning a bachelor's degree in journalism just prior to serving his country as an infantryman in the United States Army during World War II. Soonafter, Mr. Shire got a job at the Texas City Sun where he began a lengthy and successful career in journalism. While working at the Texas City Sun, Mr. Shire furthered his ambitions by submitting stories to the Houston Post. His efforts were recognized, as the paper offered him an editorial position leading to an award of, “First in Headline Writing.” As an editor of the Houston Post, he continued his desire for journalistic excellence creating for the Post a Sunday magazine, Tempo.
Alfred Price Shire had a 41-year career as a journalist and writer, and many more as a husband, father, grandfather, uncle and brother.
A memorial service will be held September 30, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. in the sanctuary of St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, 5308 Buffalo Speedway, Houston, TX.
