Many times, you read an obituary and wonder about that person. Alan R Nunn had stage 4 esophageal cancer. He underwent chemo and radiation to shrink the tumor. After that, he endured an eight-hour surgery at MD Anderson Cancer Center to remove 4 inches of his esophagus and make him a new one with part of his stomach. He finally was cancer free after that, but in July of '22 we knew something was not right with Alan. The cancer had metastases to his brain. Alan had brain surgery and they removed the tumor, followed by more radiation. In Feb of 2023, we learned he had Leptomeningeal carcinomatosis (LC) this is a rare complication of cancer in which the disease spreads to the membranes (meninges) surrounding the brain and spinal cord. For a man that had never been sick in his life this had been hard on him. The tumor had wrapped around his optic nerve causing Alan to lose his sight in left eye and he had very little sight in his right eye. It was getting hard for him to watch all his old cowboy shows that he loved so much.
Alan had an amazing life, but sadly his story has come to an end much too soon. It is very hard to lose someone you love so deeply. He was a good husband, father, and grandfather. He loved us deeply, and we knew it. He has taken care of us and watched out for us, and taught us so many things. We will miss his humor, his dad jokes, ("hey dad, how do you feel today? He would always reply, with my hands") and his lessons in life for Nikki and the grandkids. We will love him forever and he has promised to always watch over us.
Alan was born October 3, 1949, in Detroit Michigan. Norman and Ferne Nunn adopted Alan when he was a baby. When he was 6 his father, Norman passed away. The family was in the process of moving to New York City from Farmington Michigan. After his father's death, Alan and his mother returned to Toledo to be near family. Alan grew up in West Toledo, Wallwerth Dr. He attended Start High School Class of 1968. After high school he enlisted in the US Army with his good friend Marty, who would eventually become family. Alan served his country from 68-71. Alan was a Viet Nam vet and very proud of his military service. He served in Viet Nam in 1969-1970. He was combat specialist in Chu Lai, 23rd Americal Division. When Alan returned to the states, he was stationed at Fort Bragg in North Carolina with 307th engineers, 82nd Airborne Division. He was always proud to be with the 82nd. Alan made over 30 jumps. They called him the FLYING NUN.
Alan married Linda in March 1970. They would have been married 53 years this month. Alan and Linda spent most of their married life working together. They were not only husband and wife but best friends.
In 1978 they moved to Austin Texas. Alan was one of the top salesmen in Texas for Ford Motor Company. His kind demeanor made him very successful. In 1990 he returned to Toledo to be a partner in Bahama Ron Tanning, a family business. Alan and Linda returned to Texas in 2004. They had their own management company and Alan retiring in 2020. Alan loved taking trips with their daughter, Nikki and the grandkids Nicholas and Lauren. He was so proud of them.
Alan is survived by his wife Linda, daughter Nikki Nunn Mlynarek, grandkids Nicholas and Lauren of Columbus Ohio, his fur babies Gracie and Robbie. His mother, Ferne Nunn passed 1989.
Alan always had a smile on his face and was kind to everyone.
Alan's remains will stay in Katy with his wife till her passing. Alan and Linda will then be laid to rest together at Toledo Memorial Park, Sylvania Ohio. Together in a wonderful life and together in death.
