Our beloved sister, mom, grandma, wife, aunt, great grandma, and friend, Shane Oldfield-Carver, took her last breath in the comfort of her own home on October 26th, 2024. She was surrounded by so much love for the days preceding her passing. We are grateful for each moment we had with her, but for a spark like Shane, 91 years will never feel like enough.
Shane was born a daddy’s girl with a rebel spirit in Columbus, Ohio on February 28th,1933 to John and Iris Swartz. Shane, with her sisters Judy and Carol, would later recount childhood memories with smiles and mischievous laughter. She loved being a big sister. A graduate of West High School, she was a loyal and lovable friend who stayed in touch with many classmates. Through ride-alongs with her dad, she developed a strong work ethic that led her to a lifelong career in banking. A friendly and familiar face to all of her customers, she survived 9 armed bank robberies and lived to eventually laugh about them all. She mentored countless young professionals who became friends along the way.
Shane was a long-time resident of Worthington where she and Barn (Bob) raised their two children, Mike and Lee. She cherished time with her family above all else. She enjoyed cooking and baking, although her family would joke the smoke alarm would often cheer her on. Holidays were so special and always a time to laugh together. Halloween was her absolute favorite, followed closely by Christmas. This was evident through her annual hosted Pumpkin Carving and Gingerbread House competitions; happy traditions her grandkids and great grandkids looked forward to every year.
Shane was always up for an adventure. Whether it was riding in a hot air balloon, skiing cross country, playing platform tennis, riding in a glider plane, scootering in her 80s, playing sports with her grandkids, sledding, driving a tractor, chasing kids down the driveway on Halloween… Shane was up for it! Her sense of adventure made her a shoe-in for a top tier Grandma. She doted on her grandkids routinely; Marilee and Rob have countless fond memories of adventures with Grandma.
Later in life, Shane reconnected with her high school sweetheart, Ronald Carver. She laughed at the thought of being pursued in her 70s and loved the return of this good-hearted man whom she knew her father approved of some 50 years prior. They became companions and eventually married at the young age of 90. Their marriage was a beautiful celebration and solidified what their two families had known; Papa Ron and Grandma Shane were in love (again). Together they traveled, loved on their families, and laughed through the last decade and a half. Throughout her life, Shane enjoyed watching sports, participating in OSU tailgates, and this love continued as she excitedly followed all sporting activities of Ron’s grandkids and great grandkids.
Shane cultivated many loving friendships throughout her life and always enjoyed getting together with her “girlfriends.” Shane lived life to the fullest, listened without judgment, was present in every moment, rarely sweat the small stuff, supported in the most loving way, shared advice confidently, went out of her way to be kind, didn’t take herself too seriously, and laughed so hard. We miss her so much already.
Shane is survived by her husband, Ronald Carver; son Michael Oldfield; daughter Lee Oldfield; granddaughter Marilee (Jessica) Masternick; grandson Rob Oldfield; great-grandson Tripp Masternick; sisters Judith Graves and Carol (Robert) Parlette; nieces Holly (Shawn) Smith and Heidi (Shane) Smith and great-nephews; and her beloved extended Carver family; Glen, Tim & Debbie, Bridgit & Kevin, Katie & Josh, Erin, Mary & Kyle, and great grandkids.
Shane is preceded in death by her late husband Robert R. Oldfield; parents John and Iris Swartz; mother-in-law Mildred Mills; and niece Pilar Graves.
The family will receive friends on Friday, November 22nd from 5-7 PM at the First Unitarian Universalist Church, 93 W. Weisheimer Rd., Clintonville, OH 43214. We will celebrate Shane’s wonderful and full life at the same church in a ceremony on Saturday, November 23rd at 1 PM. A reception with light Shane-inspired snacks will follow.
In honor of Shane’s life and love for birds, donations can be made to the Grange Insurance Audubon Center, Columbus, Ohio.
