Born October 18, 1934 to Hearl and Lois Pomeroy in Hillsboro, Oregon. He moved to Multnomah, Oregon when he was in grade school and later attended Lincoln High School where he graduated in 1952. While living in Multnomah he met his future wife, Janice Girton, as she lived next door to his cousin. If she was visiting his cousin when he came over, she always went home because he was a big tease. After graduating high school Stan served in the Navy from 1955 to 1957, and was selected for duty on the USS Catfish submarine that was behind enemy lines during the Korean War.
Stan and Janice married on June 13th, 1959. They moved to Hood River, Oregon then to Biloxi, Mississippi for assignments with Oregon State Parks and the Oregon Air Guard. In 1965, they bought a home in Southwest Portland to start their family. Their son Brent and daughter Sheryl came along soon after.
Stan worked for the telephone company in Portland for thirty four years. There were three Stan’s that worked there. Whenever Jan called at work she said she needed to speak to the Stan that would be the last one out of the building if someone yelled “Fire!”. That got a huge chuckle out of his co-workers.
It was Stan’s dream to be more self-sufficient so they bought eight acres outside of Sherwood, Oregon in 1973 and built their own home. There, they raised their kids with a huge garden and a menagerie of fowl and animals until they both retired. The beach was calling them and in 1999 they sold the property and bought a home in Waldport, Oregon.
During his time in Waldport Stan served on the board of Sandpiper HOA, as a CASA volunteer and as an Elder at Yachats Community Presbyterian Church for years. In 2018 he moved to Sea Aire Assisted Living. Stan passed away peacefully at Samaritan Pacific Communities Hospital on April 9th, 2023 (Easter evening) from complications of Parkinson’s Disease. He is survived by his wife Jan, son Brent Pomeroy (Laurie), daughter Sheryl Young, grandchildren Kirsten, Kyle, Hailey and Tyler and great-grandchild John Thomas.
A Memorial in his honor will be held on Saturday, May 20th at 1pm at Yachats Presbyterian Church, 360 W. 7th St, Yachats, OR 97498.
