Roger was born in Omaha, Nebraska and lived much of his early years in Ashland, Nebraska, enjoying making mischief on the family farm. In his teen years the family moved to Southern California, where he met his first love, Linda. They were married December 5, 1964 and remained married until her passing in 2008. Roger worked as a meat cutter and decided he wanted to move his family to Oregon. He remembered the first Oregon camping trip and immediately knowing that was where he wanted to raise his family. In 1977 he moved to Creswell, Oregon. He worked until retirement for Sysco, first as a delivery driver and later as a shuttle driver. His managers and co-workers had wonderful accolades for his work and customer service.
He loved the outdoors and his family. His daughter’s childhood memories with Roger centered around camping, shooting, fishing and hunting. He loved working on his property to make a forested retreat, where he lived until his passing. He is also remembered for his integrity, hard work and dry sense of humor. He could build anything, fix anything and often did so over the phone when family called for assistance.
Roger is survived by his constant companion of the last 14 years, fiancé Shari Parker, 2 children, 3 grandchildren and 3 great-grandsons. Children: Lyrae (Rick) Perini of Chandler, AZ and Danette Nelson of Albany, OR. Grandchildren: Ciera (Jonathon) Brown of Mesa, AZ, Daniel (Heather) Perini, of Santa Maria, CA and Lane Giboney of Albany, OR. Great grandsons: Gibson, Rhett and Jacob. Siblings: Harold (Pam) Nelson of Anaheim, Ca and Jim (Kathy) Nelson of Murrieta, Ca. He was preceded in death by parents Allen and Doris Nelson.
There will be a private internment at Creswell Pioneer Cemetery and a memorial service to be announced at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, he was a strong supporter of the Wounded Warrior Project.
