Born on October 24, 1939, in Hutchinson, Minnesota, to Richard and Virginia Newcomb, Richard “Dick” Newcomb was the oldest son in a family of six. In high school, he was an avid wrestler and athlete and went on to join the Air Force to be stationed in Morocco. After his time in North Africa, he went to the University of Minnesota. In the early 1970s, he moved to Portland to attend Portland State University’s Political Science and Arab Studies program. Life brought him to Welches, Oregon, where he fell in love with the landscape, gardening, coaching softball, working for Canteen and Welches School, and being with loved ones. He remained there for 40+ years. He moved back to Portland in 2017 to be with his daughter Dulcinea and her family. There he became affectionately known as “Baba” and enjoyed growing tomatoes, watching ball games, eating burgers on fun occasions, and spending time with his family.
Dick is survived by his first wife Mary Lou Newcomb, mother to Angela Newcomb, his second wife, Teri Myers-Newcomb mother to Dulcinea Myers-Newcomb, his son-in-law Jared Lewis, and his grandchildren Chantia Kotilinek, Charaia Newcomb, Holland Lewis-Newcomb, Lucelle Lewis-Newcomb, and Rhys Myers-Newcomb, as well as his great-grandson Ciaro Kotilinek, both his sisters Jennifer Bernhagen and Jill Henquinet, his brother Brad Newcomb, his dear friend Bev Wence, and one of the greatest loves, his dog, Honey Penny.
