Norman Wayne Hanley passed away peacefully on 1/27/2018 with his family by his side. He was 92 years old. Norman was born in Algona, Iowa and was the second child of 13 born to Laurence J. and Edith (Nordstrom) Hanley. His brothers and sisters fondly remember Norman’s sense of humor and how he loved to pull pranks on them. His family eventually moved to Portland, Oregon, where Norman joined the US Navy in 1943 and served for 3 years as a Motor Machinist (MMOR2) in Okinawa. After being honorably discharged from the Navy in 1946, Norman began working for Yaws Topnotch in the Hollywood district as a cook. He met his first wife, Joan “Audrey” Peake, who was a waitress for Yaws. They married 1947 and in 1950, they moved to College Place, WA, where Norman attended Walla Walla College. He completed college in 3 years, graduating with a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Biology in 1952. Norman and Audrey then moved back to Portland, where in 1953, Norman began attending Dental School at the University of Oregon in Portland. He graduated in 1957 and set up his family practice in SE Portland, where he worked for 35 years. During that time, Norman and Audrey had 3 daughters; Sharon, Karla and Linda. Norman and his first wife divorced in 1981, and he married his second wife, Lilja Anniki (Reku) in 1983. She preceded him in death in 2015. In his free time, Norman enjoyed golfing, fishing and bowling. In his later years, his greatest pleasure was feeding and listing to the song birds who inhabited the trees near his home and feeding his hummingbirds.
Norman is survived by his daughters Sharon Aaltonen, Karla (Gary) Bale and Linda (Kevin) Johnson. He is also survived by 6 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren, along with brothers Robert and Gilbert Hanley and sister Donna Hanley.
