John was born in Derbyshire, England to parents, Albert Edward and Minnie Isabella Hallam. John attended Bemrose grammar school in Derby. He received a full scholarship in 1955 to study pure and applied mathematics, and applied and experimental physics at Imperial College, London. John spent summers working and studying in Spain and Germany. He next received a scholarship to study at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich.
He got his Masters Degree in Nuclear Physics at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada where he met his wife Wanda.
After a period of working at RCA Victor Research Labs in Montreal and then Babcock and Wilcox in Lynchburg, Virginia, John and family were moved to the San Jose area of California by General Electric, Nuclear Power Division. There in Silicon Valley, John devoted his working life to research in nuclear power plants.
When John retired he enjoyed life in the foothills of the California Sierras and then to the Willamette Valley in Oregon.
John is survived by his wife of 62 years, Wanda Hallam, his three daughters, Janet Mumford, Patricia Hallam, and Lara Browning.
Grandchildren: Garrett Mumford, Victoria Mumford, Wallace Browning and Amy Browning.
