Dorothy Mae Goodenberger, 89, passed away on April 30, 2018 in Milwaukie, Oregon. She was born on September 27, 1928 to parents Ernest and Hilda Goodenberger in Hastings, Nebraska. Her parents were Presbyterian missionaries on furlough. With them she lived in Kuilungkiang, China, and Chiangmai, Thailand. She also attended Kodaikanal Boarding School in India.
Dorothy graduated with a Bachelor’s in Education from Hasting’s College. She taught in Hebron, Illinois, Livingston, Montana and Harlem, Montana. In 1957 she moved to Lewistown and went on to teach 1st and 2nd grade for 27 years. While living in Lewistown, she also attended the 1st Presbyterian Church and played the organ there for over 40 years.
She also enjoyed knitting, crochet, collecting t-shirts that had funny sayings about retirement and old age, singing, and traveling. She was known for her wit and humor and for being a kind and supporting friend. In 2008 she moved to Oregon where she spent the rest of her days near her brother John and family.
Dorothy was preceded in death by a younger sister, Ruth, in China and both her brothers John Longstaff Goodenberger and Alton James Goodenberger. She is loved and missed by her surviving nieces and nephews: James Goodenberger, Bill Goodenberger, Steve Goodenberger, Susan Schneider, Jean Cobb, Bob Goodenberger, Jennifer Goodenberger, Mark Goodenberger, Ken Goodenberger, and John E. Goodenberger.
A memorial service is tentatively planned for June 30, 2018 at Oak Hills Presbyterian Church in Milwaukie Oregon where she attended for the last 10 years. Donations can be made in her name to the American Bible Society.
