He was multi-talented in life and work. Most of his work history was with computers and technical and electronic endeavors. He also enjoyed working with high school students, and he especially enjoyed coaching them in soccer. He played soccer as well, and it was his favorite way to exercise. His other favorite thing to do was fly gliders and remote control airplanes.
An interesting fact of Carlos’ life was at the beginning of it. His paternal grandmother was the nurse at his delivery, and was able to revive him from a complicated birth. He then went to Cuba with his parents, because of his father’s work, and was there when Castro came into power. They subsequently had to evacuate very quickly, because of the political situation, leaving all their belongings behind. After a stay in Tampa, Florida, the family left for the Dominican Republic, where both parents helped run the Adventist school on the island in Santo Domingo. The war followed them, as the Dominican Civil War broke out in 1965. This led them to leave the island after the US intervention allowed them passage out. They then settled in Miami, Florida, where Carlos began his schooling at Greater Miami Academy. He then went on to college at Southern Adventist University, where he was an announcer at the college radio station (WSMC) as part of his internship. He earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Communication.
He served as a navigator in the Air Force for eight years. He served at Pensacola in Florida, and then was stationed in the Philippines at Clark Air Force Base. From there he returned to the USA, and was discharged in Sacramento, California. He lived in the Sacramento area for several years, and relocated to the Portland, Oregon area in 2003.
Carlos is survived by his life partner, Kathleen Powers. He is also survived by his brother, Rick A Haylock and his wife Milly Mercado-Haylock, and his sister, Sylvia V Haylock. His parents both preceded him in death.
His service will take place on 04/29/2025 at his favorite location in Astoria, Oregon, with just family members present.
Carlos is greatly missed by his family and friends. We hope to see him again in the resurrection as given in 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18.
