Roger Clinton Davis

Roger was born in Detroit, MI, the son of Ann and Clinton Davis. He was raised in Dearborn, MI. Roger was a football, baseball and basketball stand-out in both high school and college. He graduated from Hillsdale College in 1956 and married Alice Gargano, they later divorced. In 1983 Roger married Deborah K Bennett in Memphis TN. Roger and Deborah are members of First United Methodist Church since moving to Holland five years ago.

Roger had a long career in finance and business which began at GE Credit Corporation. He served in the U. S. Army during the Korean conflict. Roger became managing director of Chrysler Compania Financiera, SA Buenos Aires, Argentina for ten years; served as President of Hickory National Bank in Sturgis, MI; senior vice president at First National Bank, Muscatine, IA; president and CEO, Tri-State Bank, East Dubuque, IL. Roger completed his banking career as president and CEO at Midwest Bank of Western Illinois in Monmouth IL (formerly First National Bank of Monmouth); and marketing director for First State Bank of Western Illinois, Macomb, IL. Following a long career in banking, Roger became the director of the Monmouth, IL Chamber of Commerce as a volunteer for one year. He then learned many landscaping duties working for a friend’s business in Monmouth.

Roger found great pleasure in serving on art center boards in both Muscatine and Monmouth; financial board member at Faith United Presbyterian Church in Monmouth; a volunteer for Wednesday Night Live, Presbyterian Youth Ministry; Roger read books to first graders in the Monmouth public school district one morning a week. The Paul Harris Award was given to Roger by his Rotary Club in Monmouth and The Monmouth Chamber of Commerce awarded Roger Citizen of the Year just before he retired. Biking, tennis, travel and dinner with friends were some of his most enjoyable activities. Roger was an avid reader of history and presidential biographies. He was a 60+ year member of the Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of Michigan and a deeply spiritual man, a true gentleman in every sense of the word; he was blessed with a quick wit and a fun sense of humor; he loved and was loved by his family and friends.

Roger was proceeded in death by his parents; brother, Dexter “Buck” (Janet) Brooks Davis; and his beloved son, Roger James Davis. He is survived by his wife, Deborah; daughters, Emily (John) Davis Gareis, Kelly (Alex Furtado) Owens, Jennifer Owens, and daughter-in-law, Laura Davis; brother, Wesley (Priscilla) Duke Davis; grandchildren, Alice (Michael) Crenshaw, Daniel Siddall, Ty Davis, Alex Monjo, Max and Maya Furtado; great grandchildren, Catalina, Aubrey, McKenzie, Charlie Roger and Hazel; and many nieces and nephews.

Services will be planned for next spring 2023. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hillsdale College; Delta Sigma Phi Fraternity, 33 E College Street, Hillsdale, MI 49242.
