She was born on the first day of Spring March 21, 1943 in Lansing to Arthur McFarland and Berta McFarland (née Hauenstein). She had a happy childhood with her brothers Lane and Tim, and early on met Dennis Prescott, the neighbor boy who would later become the love of her life when she was only 7 and he was 11 years old. They married on September 1, 1962 and enjoyed a marriage that lasted "30 years working together and 30 years retired together".
She graduated from Sexton High School in Lansing, and went on to receive a degree in interior decorating which allowed her to express her creative gifts wherever she went.
In addition to making a home of each of the 22 houses she lived in during Denny's military career and post retirement, she was a model, secretary, executive assistant, and even a 'programmer' for IBM, feeding punched cards into an early incarnation of computers.
Janice was an avid reader, knitter and everyone knew her love of handicrafts. She threw herself wholeheartedly into church activities. At First Presbyterian in Belen, New Mexico and more recently at Delta Presbyterian in Lansing, she was a speaker during services, organized Bible studies, prayer shawls, led charity drives for the less fortunate and made and distributed comfort bags for the unhoused.
She is survived by her son, Paul; daughter, Susan (Bruce); grandchildren, Jason and Anaïs; brother, Tim; sisters-in-law, Paula, Lou, Pat and Cheryl; along with many wonderful nieces and nephews.
Services will be held on Friday, September 15, 2023 at Delta Presbyterian, 6100 W Michigan Avenue, Lansing, Michigan 48917 with "Happy Hour" (visitation) from 5pm-6pm, services from 6pm-7pm, followed by a lasagna dinner.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the National Alliance to End Homelessness or to EVE, her grandson's non-profit organization to combat racism / sexism / and bullying (https://www.helloasso.com/associations/association-eveil-vivre-ensemble/formulaires/1/en).
