Professor Maas was my Cornell faculty advisor, influencing me in several important ways, including my going to law school, and later my leading a local advocacy effort for later high school start times (which, ten years later, finally was successful). I was fortunate to see him both in Ithaca and Philadelphia during my (many) years post-graduation. He was a wonderful mentor to me, and I will forever appreciate and hold him dear. My sincere condolences to Nancy, Dan, Justin and family.

We fondly remember Professor James Maas, a distinguished psychologist and longtime faculty member at Cornell University. Renowned for his engaging teaching and pioneering research on sleep and performance, Dr. Maas inspired generations of students through his popular lectures (Psychology 101) and groundbreaking work, including his bestselling book “Power Sleep”, and his films, for example, “Bravo Gloria” (collaboration with Arlene Alda) and “Sleep for success”.  His passion for education and science left a lasting impact on the field of psychology and on all who had the privilege to learn from him. He will be deeply missed - and warmly remembered. 

Coming to Cornell as an exchange student (87-88) I was impressed by professor Maas genuine interest in students learning. I returned  to Cornell – and was welcomed by the whole Maas family  (89). Thank you for also sharing a loving family – that served as inspiration for my own family development in the years to come (Nancy, the much admired very creative artist, Dan and Justin, kids that asked for landing permission  at a very young age in a fight simulator (!) before coming to dinner, and a playful Scat). I treasure these memories!

We grew up together. He lived across the street from me  on Cambridge.

I’ll always cherish the warm smiles, the funny stories, and the big steaks. I loved our trips to Bridge Street, wandering through the dress shops together, enjoying a Killwin’s ice cream. He was truly the best father-in-law I could have ever hoped for.

What a blessing to have been able to join Jim, Nancy, Scout & friends to celebrate Jim’s 85th birthday. His heart was so big & full & he enjoyed spreading the joy. My favorite memory, however, was his closing words during my dissertation defense-his approval and endorsement meant the world to me. From the time we met at AA baggage claim until forever, he holds a place in my heart.
