Born on May 25, 1948, in Rockville Centre, New York, to Robert Frederick and Willo June (Schell) Nichols, Fred’s family returned to Adrian, Michigan, in 1954. It was there that he spent his formative years cultivating the interests and lifelong curiosity that would define him.
A graduate of Adrian High School, Fred attended Michigan Technological University before transferring to Michigan State University. He graduated in 1970 with a Bachelor’s degree in Business, launching a long and respected career in sales and marketing. While based in the Lansing area, Fred’s work took him all across Michigan, where he built lasting professional relationships. He spent many years as a dedicated salesman for Genesee Cut Stone and Marble, where his expertise in granite, marble, and limestone served him well until his retirement in 2010.
On November 23, 1974, Fred married Dianne Evelyn Dewey. Together, they built a life centered on family, hard work, and the lively years spent cheering on their boys at hockey rinks. They raised two sons, Robert and James, creating homes filled with warmth, humor, and hospitality in DeWitt and Glen Arbor.
Fred felt truly at home in both DeWitt and Northern Michigan. He cherished his time in Glen Arbor, where he could often be found kayaking with family, capturing the perfect photo, or sitting on his deck watching the freighters pass by. He thoroughly enjoyed his "daily road trips" for lunch, exploring local spots near home. A man of many interests, he closely followed the stock market and loved keeping up with the latest adventures of his children and grandchildren. Fred was known for his quick wit, a remarkable memory, a love of tools, and a gift for conversation.
More than anything, Fred was a family man. He was immensely proud of his sons, grateful for his lifelong friendships, and cherished every moment spent with those he loved.
Fred is survived by his wife of 51 years, Dianne; sons, Robert “Bob” (Krystyna) and James “Jim” (Alyssa); beloved grandchildren, Isabella, Sydney, Eloise, and Silas; as well as his extended family and many dear friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; twin brother, Jeffery Nichols; and his beloved grandson, Abel.
Friends and family are invited to an informal gathering to share stories on Tuesday, May 19, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Relli’s Sports Bar, 202 E. Main, DeWitt. A Memorial Service for immediate family will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family encourages you to honor Fred’s memory in the way he lived: spend intentional time with your family, travel somewhere meaningful, or share a good story with someone you love.
