Robert Edward Helwig

Robert (K0IKV) Edward Helwig, age 86, of Lake Elmo, Minnesota, passed away peacefully at his home on September 7, 2026, surrounded by his loved ones.

Robert was born on January 2, 1940, in South St. Paul, Minnesota, to William and Ester Helwig. He grew up in South St. Paul, where he graduated from high school. He went on to attend the University of Minnesota, earning a degree in Liberal Arts. From 1960 to 1963, he proudly served his country in the U.S. Army as a field radio repair specialist.

Robert was married to Judith “Judy” (Engberg) Voght, and together they raised their three sons, Steve, Thomas, and Jeremy. Later in life, Robert found a loving and devoted partner in Barb Beintema. They shared many meaningful years together, building a life filled with love, companionship, laughter, and cherished memories.

Robert worked as a computer programmer and was admired for his strong work ethic, dependability, and willingness to lend a helping hand. Even after retirement, he continued to give back to his community, driving a bus for elderly and disabled passengers. His dedication to helping others reflected the kindness and generosity he carried throughout his life.

Robert had a lifelong love of ham radio, model trains, and John Deere tractors. In his younger years, he also enjoyed flying small aircraft. He took great pride in his home and yard and, above all, in his family. Robert was happiest when surrounded by the people he loved. He especially treasured time spent with his grandchildren and took great joy in welcoming family and friends into his home for visits.

Robert is survived by his sons, Steve (Wendy) Helwig; Thomas & Lucy (the dog) Helwig; and Jeremy (Christina) Helwig; his grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and great-great-grandchildren; his partner, Barb Beintema; his siblings, Larry and Linda; and many other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents William and Esther Helwig, and mother of his sons, Judith "Judy" Voght.

A celebration of Robert’s life will be held on October 10 at 1:00 p.m. at his home in Lake Elmo.

Robert will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered for his kindness, generosity, devotion to his family, and the many ways he cared for those around him. He leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and countless cherished memories. His memory will live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing and loving him.
