Our hearts are heavy as we mourn the loss of a beloved father, trailblazer, musician, and creative intellectual, Thomas Scott Maland. Born on January 18, 1952, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Tom was a man of brilliance, talent, and unwavering spirit who touched the lives of his family, friends, and the regional music community in profound and lasting ways.
As a proud father of three and grandfather of four, he raised his children with a passion that flowed through generations, while pursuing his love for playing music and composing commercial tunes that resonated with audiences far and wide. As a leader of the Mill City Blues Band and several other groups, ‘Mr. Low Note’ blended traditional blues with contemporary influences. His dedication to building and growing his own musical brand was a testament to his work ethic and creative genius. Whether performing in intimate venues or at larger festivals, Tom's presence was magnetic, and his legacy will live on through the many recordings he left behind and the countless lives he touched.
In addition to his musical career, Tom’s passion for music and his relentless drive to push creative boundaries were evident in everything he did. A true visionary, Tom was not only an artist but also an entrepreneur, who nurtured a number of small businesses that were a large part of his life. These ventures were far more than professional endeavors; they were meaningful outlets for Tom to share his ideas and showcase his intelligence and innovative spirit.
Tom is lovingly remembered by his family and friends who will continue to honor his passion for music and creativity. Although he is no longer with us, Tom’s legacy will endure through the lives he touched and the music he created. He was, and always will be, a legend in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
