Terry Patrick Cooney age 81 of Bloomington, MN passed away peacefully on April 3, 2023. Terry was born on May 5, 1941, in Minneapolis, MN. He graduated from Roosevelt High School (Mpls) where he made life-long friends and participated in varsity hockey and baseball. After briefly attending the University of Minnesota, he went on to have a lengthy career with the Minnesota Department of Transportation.
Terry was an avid sportsman who enjoyed hockey, baseball, golf, fishing and pretty much any sport he tried. He brought his love of competition and sportsmanship to the role of coach where he spent many years guiding young athletes in a variety of sports with the Bloomington Athletic Association. Once retired from MNDOT, he was a weekly participant in Men's Open Hockey at the Bloomington Ice Gardens. He and Kay shared a love for travel and enjoyed visiting many locations around the world. In addition to travel, he and Kay together found a passion for music and dancing and so enjoyed the many new friends they met along the way. He was a faithful parishioner of St. Edward’s Catholic Church.
Terry loved spending time with family especially weekends at the cabin and vacations around the United States. He thoroughly enjoyed attending his grandson’s school and sporting events. He was a most outstanding “Gramps” and “Bapa” and was never afraid to wrestle around or play a game of knee hockey or H.O.R.S.E. He loved teaching them to build all sorts of creations in his basement workshop. He took special joy in sharing words of wisdom from the moment they were born and sharing insight not only on how to "do" things but also how to always show up, be humble, kind and respectable young boys and men.
Terry was preceded in death by parents, Eugene and Catherine Cooney and sister, Patricia (Wyss). He is survived by loving wife of 57 years, Kay (Caulfield) and children Sara (Tom) Preimesberger of Woodbury, MN and Brian (Kelly) Cooney of Minneapolis, MN; and grandchildren, Will, Ryan, Connor and Hudson.
A mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Edward’s Catholic Church, 9401 Nesbitt Avenue S, Bloomington, MN at 11AM on Saturday, April 29.
