Ronnie Lee Dumdei, 81, a longtime educator and prominent member of McLaughlin, SD, passed away February 12th, 2025 in Maple Grove, Minnesota. Born to Gust and Katherine (Holweger) Dumdei on July 5, 1943, in Bowdle, South Dakota, Ron's life was marked by service to others and dedication to his community.
After graduating from Bowdle High School in 1961, Ron pursued higher education at Northern State College, earning his Master's degree in 1969. He had a 45-year career in education at McLaughlin School District, as both an industrial arts teacher and later as a guidance counselor. His commitment to education extended beyond the classroom through his active involvement in the South Dakota Education Association.
In 1967, Ron married Sonja Warwick, beginning a loving marriage that would span five decades. Together they raised two sons, Chad and Ryan, and were blessed with four granddaughters: Addison, Ella, Alex, and Sadie.
Though his heart remained tied to McLaughlin, a devastating house fire six years ago led Ron and Sonja to relocate to Maple Grove, Minnesota. While the fire claimed their material possessions, it also brought a blessing: precious years spent in closer proximity to their sons, daughter’s in-law and granddaughters.
Throughout his life in McLaughlin, Ron's dedication to public service was evident in his many roles including, ambulance crew and a civic leader, serving both as a mayor and city councilman. His faith guided his life, leading him to serve in many roles at his local church.
Ron worked as a crop adjuster for 25 years, combining his love for the land with service to the farming community. Being trained as a carpenter, he was known for his ability to fix anything. Ron had a passion for hunting and fishing, and above all, he was known for his gentle spirit and kind heart. His greatest joys came from his faith and his family, who he loved deeply.
Ron joins his parents, Gust and Katherine Dumdei, his sisters Leona Bollinger, Lila Bachman, and his brothers Edgar, Elvin, and Kenny Dumdei in eternal rest. He is survived by his loving wife Sonja, his sons Chad (Jenny) and Ryan (Steph), and his cherished granddaughters Addison and Ella (Chad) and Alex and Sadie (Ryan) as well as many other loving family members and friends.
Ron's legacy lives on through the countless lives he touched as an educator, public servant, and family man. His unwavering commitment to his community, his faith, and his family serves as an inspiration to all who knew him. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Dementia Society of America.
